Thumb-area farmer reports smooth harvest

The chairman of the Michigan Corn Growers Association says weather this fall has made fieldwork fairly easy.

While digging sugarbeets last week, Matt Frostic told Brownfield rains had little impact on the pace of harvest.

“Our soil moisture bank is pretty dry right now so we can handle a few rains and still be pretty productive in the field,” he says.

He says dry conditions have helped improve equipment and labor efficiencies, cutting costs, but…

“I think this crop could have been a lot better but we’re going to be very happy with what we get, maybe average to strong average yields out of corn and soybeans at this point,” he shares.

The very few rains Frostic received he says were timely enough, however, early harvests of some fields have varied nearly a hundred bushels in places.

Frostic grows corn, soybeans, and sugarbeets, and raises cattle in Applegate.
