This week will not end infrastructure progress

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi remains optimistic a vote on the infrastructure bill is still possible after talks ran into early Friday morning.

Republican Senator Rob Portman of Ohio, a co-sponsor of the bipartisan bill, tells Brownfield if it’s unable to pass it’s a true sign of how partisan Washington has become.

“It shouldn’t be that way, it should be on the merits, does this make sense or not?” he says.  “I think this bill really makes sense; we’ve got 69 votes for it in the United States Senate.”

Portman says if it does fail this week, he believes it will not be the end of the legislation.

“Farmers need good infrastructure to be able to get their product to market,” he says.  “We also need good infrastructure to be able to have our ports work properly and our waterways work properly—and right now we’re falling behind in all of those areas.”

Work also continues on the reconciliation bill which House Republican Bob Gibbs tells Brownfield will not be supported by his party.

“No Republican in the United States House of Representatives or United States Senate will vote for it,” he says.

Both spoke with Brownfield during Ohio Farm Bureau’s Washington Legislative Experience.
