The role of E15 in energy security for the US

The CEO of the Missouri Corn Growers Association says Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has further underlined the need for energy security and diversity in the US.

Bradley Schad tells Brownfield, “In a world where energy security matters more than ever, we need all the help we can get, and there is no better resource than the American corn farmer producing ethanol made right here in the United States.”

He says the first step needs to be an emergency declaration by the EPA or passage of a bill in congress to allow the sale of E15 this summer.

“Right now, ethanol is 70 to 80 cents per gallon cheaper than gasoline. If we don’t see an immediate emergency rule, retailers won’t be able to sell E-15 in the summertime months which will hurt consumers during their summer travel.”

And he says passage of the Next Generation Fuels Act would permanently open the door for year-round E15 sales.

“It gives the auto makers the ability to continue producing internal combustion engines on a high-octane fuel that reduced emissions and works to help fill the need of energy security from right here at home and doing so with a renewable product.”

Schad says converting 1/3 of all fuel pumps to E15 would fill the gap caused by halting imports of Russian oil.
