A new study from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater says potatoes contributed more than $522 million to the Wisconsin economy annually.  The Fiscal and Economic Research Center at U.W. Whitewater says the industry is responsible for 3,122 jobs which accounts for about half of the economic impact.  Another $16.8 million is collected by the state as tax revenue.

Harvesting 2.6 billion pounds of potatoes in 2013, Wisconsin is the third-largest potato-growing state in the Union behind Idaho and Washington.  Most of the potatoes grown in Wisconsin are in Portage, Waushara, Adams and Langlade Counties.

This week’s Crop Progress Report from the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service says 67 percent of the 2014 potato crop has been harvested as of Sunday.
