Thatcher says Trump team getting ag trade message

The policy director for the American Farm Bureau says agriculture is more at ease about trade after hearing again from Ray Starling, ag advisor for the Trump Administration, on Ag Day today.

Mary Kay Thatcher tells Brownfield Farm Bureau was among 20 ag groups that met with Starling and the rest of the Trump ag transition team in January and nearly everyone said Ag Trade is their top concern, “I think the message that we’re now hearing back is they understand that. They’re going to work very hard to make sure agriculture is not hurt. But, that doesn’t mean that we are going to pay any less attention.”

Brownfield asked Thatcher if those in ag are concerned about the FBI investigation of the Trump administration and if it might overshadow ag policy, “Uh, no, I think everybody’s really more focused on the actual policy issues. You know, we’re spending a ton of time on trade, as we just talked. Also, immigration. That is getting to be a bigger and bigger problem with people getting calls saying, ‘you know, I’ve worked for you for 10 years but I’m afraid to leave Mexico.’”

About 30 state farm bureau delegations are in Washington, DC for National Ag Week events.
