Taiwan protesters march against U.S. pork, beef
Protesters in Taiwan gathered in the streets on Sunday during the Autumn Struggle to march against U.S. pork and beef imports. The Autumn Struggle is an annual protest march by labor groups.
The protests, organized by Taiwan’s main opposition party the KMT, come after Taiwan’s president announced in August that U.S. pork imports will be allowed to contain ractopamine starting January 1st. Ractopamine is a feed additive that increases food conversion efficiency in livestock. The country also dropped restrictions on beef over 30 months old.
Taiwan’s governing party, the Democratic Progressive Party, said the KMT should stop its political schemes and ‘return to rational discussions.”
