SW Missouri farmer gets rain but too late for corn

A southwest Missouri farmer caught in a drought pattern this summer has finally gotten some steady rain. Kyle Kirby tells Brownfield they got three to four inches of rain last week but it’s too late for most of his corn, “We chopped about a third of our corn crop and put it in the silage bunker. That kind of tells the story on that.”

Kirby says only his irrigated corn is in good shape, “The early season corn kind of started denting and you know when that happens it’s hard to repair at that stage. Some of the mid-season corn that looked green it’s not so rosy either. It’s got a lot of pollination problems.”

Kirby says his soybeans held on in the hot, dry weather, “Beans are a different story. They look excellent. You know, I would put our beans having about as much potential right now as they can have.”

Kirby says they’ve got their fingers crossed for a really good bean crop.
