Survey finds lack of consumer understanding in carbon markets

Consumers have a limited understanding of the carbon farming market, according to a recent survey by Agoro Carbon Alliance.

Agronomist Caleb Smith tells Brownfield additional labeling may be needed.

“A lot of it has to do with the way our commodities are currently sold. We have non-GMO commodities, organic commodities, and much more,” he says. “For this to really pick up we have to be able to find a carbon neutral label. So as consumers have more products that are labeled carbon neutral or labeled sustainably grown and things of this nature, the more awareness will come.”

He says education is also needed among farmers.

“We have to start by educating farmers more and really making farmers aware of opportunities in the carbon market and all the positive effects of enrolling in the carbon market before we can expect consumers to get on board as well,” he says. “It really starts with the farmers.”

The Independent research conducted by Agoro Carbon Alliance studied consumer perspectives on carbon farming and its perceived effect on climate change. The survey was conducted February 25-27 and included more than 1,000 responses from U.S. adults.
