Surprisingly good crop in southeast Minnesota

A southeast Minnesota farmer says his crops did surprisingly well in 2016.

Pete Henslin tells Brownfield above normal temperatures helped offset excess moisture throughout the growing season.

“It ended up being a lot better than we thought it would be.  We had some of the best yields we’ve ever had.”

He says the soybean harvest did present some challenges.

“With the soybeans, we didn’t get a killing frost until late, so the beans stayed tough but yielded well.”

And Henslin says they’re completely finished will fall fieldwork.

“Got the corn out, and we ridge-till so as soon as we had the corn out the tillage was done too.  So it was a good year, but it seemed like it got drug out.  I’m glad it’s over.”

Henslin grows corn, soybeans and alfalfa with his father near Dodge Center.
