SUPCO won’t hear CA egg law challenge

The U.S. Supreme Court has denied a petition against the California egg law that requires more stringent conditions for eggs from egg-laying hens in all 50 states.

Missouri’s Attorney General’s office has led a multi-state fight against the law, saying it is unconstitutional, and puts an unnecessary burden on egg producers in other states.

The Supreme Court’s action makes the Ninth Circuit federal appeals court decision stand. That court confirmed a ruling that Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and three other states (Alabama, Kentucky and Oklahoma) which brought the lawsuit have no standing in the case.

California voters approved larger cages for egg laying hens in 2008, a campaign supported by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).
