Stimulus package includes aid for farmers

The massive economic stimulus package being discussed in the Senate includes funding for another round of Market Facilitation Program payments, along with aid for cattle producers.

That’s according to North Dakota Senator John Hoeven, who chairs the Senate Agriculture Appropriations Committee. He is leading the effort to recharge USDA’s Commodity Credit Corporation spending authority and increase its limit from 30 billion billion to 50 billion dollars.

Hoeven said the legislation would enable USDA to utilize CCC funding to assist cattle producers whose markets have fallen sharply in recent weeks. Hoeven said he will continue working with USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue to provide relief to impacted producers and ranchers “in a way that works”.

The stimulus bill stalled Sunday evening when a procedural vote failed 47-47. Sixty votes are needed to advance the measure.  According to various media reports, both sides are trying to iron out differences and another vote may take place today.

  • I’m a banker by day and a cattle producer by night. The cattle people need assistance and lots of it. Before the recent drop in the markets the cattle people was swimming in red ink and I can attest to that as not only a producer but as an Ag lender, my local bank deals with almost all livestock loans. The livestock industry has their backs against the wall. We need help SOON. The cattle industry has rarely asked for assistance, we need it now in the worst way. We as producers are way below the cost of production and I do not see much improvement coming in the near future. The crop sector has been helped twice through MFP and as I read will get assistance again this year, please remember the cattle sector as well.

  • We sale our calves off every year to make our balloon payment. Now there is no farmers to buy so what do we do please tell me

    • We do this too. Our payment is due the end of this month. I cant sleep worrying that its not going to get paid

  • I have a balloon farm payment due shortly but the price of cattle for selling will not help me make my payment. What help can I expect to get my payment deferred so no default issues arrive?

  • Have any of you read what they are doing for small businesses. Loans and forgiveness if they don’t fire their employees. I don’t know if that includes temp lay-off. This is a mess and always someone gets hurt. I’m very small and last year hay prices where unacceptable. It was price gouging. This shot needs regulation and profits can be built in so an operation can st least survive and modernize as well as provide for safe rearing of cattle. Again I am a small guy and haven’t been able to replace any calves. The big guys don’t give a *expletive* because if their greed. I can say that without regret. They then move in with their gov supplied subsidies to buy up your land for dirt cheap or the bank takes it. Where is this government that is to protect the citizens welfare and property! Where is it. Taxes and debt are designed for that very thing. It’s unamerican. Capitalism is not American as it has developed. It was taxes taught to every student that sparked revolution. It was the spark that built the filling keg of explosives.
