Stephenson: Milk prices can rise again

A dairy economist says milk prices have improved, but the market still has some concerns.  Mark Stephenson with the University of Wisconsin Center for Dairy Profitability tells Brownfield the milk price has come up about two dollars a hundredweight from last August, but he says, “The markets are kind of stalled right now. There’s this question about do we have enough? Do we have too little?”

Stephenson says he expects milk prices to eventually climb higher. “The last cold storage report certainly surprised people with cheese numbers being down quite a bit. I think that’s going to lend support for higher prices here in the near future.”

Stephenson advises farmers to hang in there and to reach out to local and state resources and the Center for Dairy Profitability if they need management advice or stress counseling.
