State ag officials ask FDA for hemp regulatory framework

A federal regulatory framework for hemp products from the Food and Drug Administration was requested by state ag officials (today) Friday.

The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) sent comments to the FDA emphasizing the need for a system that all states can follow, saying consistency will be a key factor for the emerging industry.

If no federal action is taken, states must create their own regulations for hemp products.

NASDA also encourages the development of standards and definitions of hemp products to limit consumer confusion.

NASDA welcomed the FDA to discuss the framework at their annual meeting in September.
