SREs decision before the election? Grassley sounds skeptical

Some backers of biofuels are pushing the Trump Administration to announce a decision, before the November election, on those 98 pending requests for small refinery exemptions (SREs).

Iowa Senator Chuck says he would like to see that happen, but he sounds skeptical that it will.

“I wish they would say that they aren’t going to give any of them–before the election. That would be the best thing to happen,” Grassley says. “But I presume that there’s other people in the administration that think, ‘why stir up a hornet’s nest between refiners and ethanol before the election.’

“All I can tell you is that I heard (Senator Joni) Ernst, one-on-one with the president, encouraging him to do it–and I hope he does do it.”

The Renewable Fuels Association says the 98 pending SRE petitions at EPA have the potential to erase another four-point-six billion gallons of RFS blending requirements. RFA says that would eclipse the four billion gallons already lost as a result of the 85 SREs previously granted for the 2016 to 2018 compliance years.
