Specialty crops harvest underway in Nebraska

Central Nebraska farmer Clay Govier says harvest is underway.

“We actually knocked down some kidney beans the other day and hopefully we will get those combined and picked up here in the next four or five days,” Govier says. “Harvest has kind of already begun but we’ll do some high moisture corn and I bet that will get going in another week to 10 days.”

Govier grows corn and soybeans a long with a variety of specialty crops near Broken Bow.

He tells Brownfield, “We’ve already harvested our cereal rye,” he says. “We grow our own cover crop and kind of put of straw and everything and they did reasonably well. The peas didn’t do quite as well this year because of the June heat during pollination but the rye did relatively well given how dry it was.”

Govier expects corn and soybean harvest to start in about three to four weeks.

He serves on the Nebraska Soybean Board and spoke with Brownfield during NSB’s annual meeting at soybean research plot tours near Mead.
