Soybean, poultry groups on Cuba trade mission

U.S. poultry and soybean groups are on a soybean checkoff funded trade mission in Cuba this week.  Since limited ag trade with Cuba was first permitted in 2000, the island has become the fourth largest export destination for U.S. poultry products.  The poultry and egg industry consumes about half the soybean meal produced in the U.S.

The delegation is meeting with soybean, poultry, and egg industry representatives to get a better feel for Cuba’s food distribution system and to talk about biosecurity, food safety, and nutrition.

The mission’s focus is to assess the potential for greater U.S. ag trade as relations between the U.S. and Cuba continue to develop.

The Illinois Soybean Association checkoff program and the Iowa Soybean Association, funded by the soybean checkoff, are backing the trip.
