Soybean agronomist says farmers will need to maneuver around crop protection issues

An extension soybean agronomist cautions farmers to prepare for the worst when making weed management plans for the upcoming growing season. 

Seth Naeve with the University of Minnesota says supply chain disruptions are affecting the price and availability of crop protection products.

“What I’ve been telling farmers is (to) just be prepared. Know what you’ve got to have and what you absolutely need to have, and get some of those things booked if you have to. And then be flexible.”

Speaking to Brownfield Wednesday during the MN Ag Expo in Mankato, Minnesota, he says soybean growers need to put a premium on pre-emergent herbicide this spring.

“Because we’re very used to going out and cleaning things up in the old days with just a shot of Roundup. More recently, Roundup plus a couple other things. And then maybe Liberty or Dicamba. But if some of those things are tight, then we’re going to have to go back to some other chemistries that offer less opportunity.”

Naeve says premium pre’s and larger combinations of herbicides will pay dividends this year.
