Soy farmers commit $900,000 to soybean meal export project

A group of soybean farmer organizations is helping fund a major export terminal expansion project on the West Coast.

Mike Steenhoek with the Soy Transportation Coalition says Omaha-based cooperative AGP is adding storage capacity and developing a new ship loader at the Port of Grays Harbor in Aberdeen, Washington. These upgrades will help increase soybean meal exports from 3 million to 6 million metric tons.

“A lot of this is inspired by the increased amount of soybean processing that’s occurring in the United States and is planned here in this country,” Steenhoek said.

The expansion projects are expected to be completed in 2025.

Steenhoek tells Brownfield several soy organizations have committed $900,000 to help the Port offset some of the costs.

“Soybean farmers are really pleased to be able to partner in this effort and provide some degree of support to seeing this project become a reality,” he said. “It’s going to be a big win for soybean farmers.”

The organizations include the Nebraska Soybean Board, Iowa Soybean Association, Kansas Soybean Commission, North Dakota Soybean Council, South Dakota Soybean Research and Promotion Council, and the Soy Transportation Coalition.
