Southwest Minnesota farmer on edge of drought

A farmer in southwest Minnesota has been on the edge of drought most of the growing season.

Chris Hill of Brewster says conditions the past few months have been “very variable.”

“We might get a rain (and) got a rain, drive five miles away and the neighbors got no rain. It was very much hit and miss all through June and July.”

He tells Brownfield a similar pattern seems to be developing as harvest begins.

“Just like the rains earlier in the season, my father lives about six miles away from me (and) got .9 (inches of rain) in his bucket and I only got a tenth or two in my bucket.”

Hill says some early maturity soybeans are ready to be harvested, but he’ll have to wait a day or two for conditions to dry out.
