Southern Illinois average wheat yield projected at 70 BPA

Data is tallied from Tuesday’s Southern Illinois Winter Wheat Tour with the overall average yield projected just over 70 bushels per acre.

Attendees split into four groups collecting tiller counts of 50 random fields across 16 counties. Dave Devore with Siemer Milling in Teutopolis tells Brownfield what he observed in Effingham, Clay, Jasper and Richland counties.

“The crop at this point in time is in very good shape. I would say the tiller counts are maybe slightly above average. We really didn’t see any issues out in the field, nothing on the flag leaf at this point in time that would cause any concern, nothing on the head of the wheat plant that would cause any concern.”

Devore says he believes cooler weather a few weeks ago slowed growth and put the crop about 5 days behind normal, so it is a little early to accurately assess quality.

“We will need to go back out into the fields here probably in another 10 days, that might give us a better indication of there are any kind of quality issues.”

Based on the 15 fields he scouted, Devore predicts harvest will begin in that area between June 20th and 25th.

The highest estimated yield of the day came in at 125 bushels per acre from a field in Richland county and the lowest was a Madison County field at 35 bpa. Based on the data, average low yields are predicted around 58 bpa with average higher yields around 80bpa.
