South Dakota’s soybean harvest, corn silage cutting progress

South Dakota had warm temperatures and scattered rain, but soybean harvest and corn silage cutting continued. The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service says South Dakota’s corn crop is 53 percent good to excellent and 64 percent mature.  Corn harvest is 6 percent done.

Soybeans are 61 percent good to excellent, with 88 percent of the crop dropping leaves and 11 percent harvested.

Sorghum is 67 percent mature, with 13 percent of the crop harvested.

Alfalfa hay is only 25 percent good to excellent, with the third cutting 80 percent done.  The fourth cutting is 43 percent done.

Winter wheat planting is 42 percent complete, well behind the 65 percent complete last year at this time, and 11 percentage points behind what’s considered to be average for this time of the year. South Dakota pastures are 36 percent good to excellent.
