South Dakota sunflower harvest nears end

The sunflower harvest is winding down as the winter wheat crop develops in South Dakota.

In its last weekly crop progress report for 2020, the USDA says 96 percent of the state’s sunflower acres have been harvested.  That’s well ahead of last year’s 68 percent and the five-year average of 88 percent.

With most of the winter wheat emerged statewide, just 57 percent of the crop is rated good to excellent.
