South Dakota farmers might see earlier dicamba date

South Dakota farmers could see an earlier dicamba application cutoff date in 2023. South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources Secretary Hunter Roberts says it will be early next year before the state hears a response from EPA, “In talking to EPA, it sounds like it’s something they’ve got to work through their process, but they think it’ll happen.”

Neighboring states like Iowa and Minnesota have already adjusted their dicamba application dates. Roberts is optimistic South Dakota sees just as much improvement in the number of dicamba complaints, “Dicamba is a very valuable technology and it certainly helps a lot with week resistance, being able to have additional technology there for our producers. Certainly, we’re trying to balance that – how do we protect and prevent as much drift as possible while also allowing those producers to have that option.”

If approved, South Dakota’s new dicamba cutoff date would be June 20.
