South Dakota corn grower calls for more competitive input markets

A state corn grower leader says a study indicates reasons behind escalating input costs. South Dakota Corn Growers President Scott Stahl tells Brownfield a Texas A&M study indicates rising fertilizer prices are not reflective of the market and are putting an undue squeeze on producers.

“If you happen to buy your inputs during a time when it’s transitorily high, your chances to sell in the fall a year later really put you in a difficult position,” said Stahl, during an interview with Brownfield Ag News at the 2022 Commodity Classic in New Orleans.

Stahl – who farms in southeastern South Dakota – says he hopes the study results in what he calls fair and competitive input markets.

“Those are the things we need to, I think, look for,” he said, “is just a competitive industry in which supply and demand is truly realized in the market.”
