Some replanting underway in the Eastern Corn Belt

Heavy rains following planting are causing some fields to be replanted in the Eastern Corn Belt.

Patty Mann raises corn in west central Ohio.

“One area in Shelby County got a really hard two-inch rain the same day that we planted it so there was a pretty thick crust on there. We thought we were going to have to redo the whole field. We decided to get everything planted the first time and then circle back and see what we had to replant to give it more time. When we went back a week later and looked at (the crop), It looked better than we thought,” she says. “…we ended up replanting 53 acres total of corn, which wasn’t bad at all. We completely replanted one 30-acre field and then patched in the other 23 acres.”

She tells Brownfield the family continues to scout fields for any issues.

“We have a couple more fields in Hardin County we need to scout and see if we need to go there and replant because that field had a little bit of a crust on it too,” she says.

West Central Indiana Farmer Kevin Cox says some replanting is underway in his area.

“With corn that had some less than desirable stands where it was planted early, there’s been some really inconsistent growth patterns because of the cold weather and conditions it was planted into,” he says. “There are some concerns as to what that’s going to end up resulting in.”

Cox raises corn and soybeans in Clay and Parke counties.
