Soil health concerns from persistent rainfall

A west-central Missouri farmer says he’s back in the field after being rained out for about a month.

Daniel Carpenter tells Brownfield the constant rain has farmers in his area concerned about soil health.

“With quite a bit of rainfall has a lot of guys concerned, frankly, on the availability of nitrogen and how much the rainfall affected our nitrogen supply in the soil,” he said. “A lot of guys right now are considering a top dress application of nitrogen.”

He said he dealt with similar conditions last year.

“You could see corn start firing from lack of nitrogen towards the end of June, first part of July,” Carpenter said. “I suspect we’ll probably see several of those situations as well.”

Carpenter said he’s about to wrap up his first round of corn planting before working on replant and is about 60 percent through soybean planting.
