Social engagement will impact next Farm Bill

A member of the House Agriculture Committee says the power of social engagement will impact the next Farm Bill.

Representative Tim Walz of Minnesota took part in a Farm Bill meeting in Utica Thursday hosted by the Land Stewardship Project.

He told a packed community center members of Congress will be influenced by public perception.

“You can get a permit to mine, but we all know the real permit is the social permit.  If you don’t get the social permit, nothing’s going to happen in a real way.”

He says Farm Bill issues like food safety and food quality have never been more polarizing.

“If we start to make the argument that doing things the right way (with) a vision on tomorrow and the next generation, very much engages people.”

Walz pointed to grassroots efforts that led to the inclusion of the Beginning Farmer and Rancher program in the 2008 Farm Bill as an example of how individuals can help shape future legislation.
