Snow cover is welcomed for Midwest farmers

An ag meteorologist says last week’s snowstorm brought much needed cover to many parts of the Corn Belt.

“Whether it be snow cover, snow fall or any kind of precip for that matter.”

Greg Soulje tells Brownfield most of the region has been moisture-starved since the fall.

“Some of the more substantial snows are over the northern and northwest parts of Illinois,” he says. “Whether it’s there, through parts of Wisconsin, a good portion of Iowa, Minnesota—there’s a water equivalency, or if you melt that, you’re going to come up with almost an inch or maybe an inch and a half of rainfall.”

If artic temperatures continue for those areas in the southern Corn Belt without much snow cover, Soulje says that could mean trouble for winter wheat.
