Smooth harvest coming to a close in Minnesota

A relatively smooth harvest is coming to an end in Minnesota.

University of Minnesota Extension corn agronomist Jeff Coulter tells Brownfield dry conditions helped get crops out.

“And we had good conditions for drying the grain in the fields, so we didn’t need to use quite as much propane as some years.”

As of Sunday, USDA says corn harvest is running nearly two weeks ahead of normal at 92 percent done.

Coulter says yields are highly variable.

“Some places were average. Other areas that were in severe drought, especially that started early, those areas had pretty poor yields.”

But he says some Minnesota farmers harvested a record or near record crop.
