Smithfield makes GHG reduction pledge

Programs ICONSmithfield Foods has announced a plan to reduce Green House Gas Emissions (GHGs) by 25-percent by the year 2025 by partnering with the Environmental Defense Fund.

Smithfield says it will put new projects and practices in place throughout its supply chain. It intends to improve fertilizer efficiency to create ‘grain supply chain’ sustainability; install anaerobic digesters and lagoon covers on 30-percent of company-owned hog farms; make upgrades in refrigeration and processing equipment and reduce transportation fuel consumption, among other things.

Smithfield says it is the first protein company to announce a GHG emissions reduction plan which it claims is equal to removing 900-thousand cars from the road or 4 million metric tons of GHGs.
