Slow growth in Nebraska’s pastures

Nebraska farmers and ranchers welcomed last week’s rains, but the cold temperatures are creating some challenges for livestock producers.

The latest crop progress and weather report for Nebraska notes the cold weather is stressing young calves and has made livestock care more difficult.  In addition, pastures continue to show little growth, forcing ranchers to draw on already short forage supplies.

As of Sunday, hay and forage supplies rated 63 percent short to very short and 37 percent adequate.  Stock water supplies rated 36 percent short to very short and 64 percent adequate.

The condition rating of Nebraska’s winter crop stayed just about the same as one week ago, with 50 percent of the crop still rated poor to very poor, 38 percent fair and 12 percent good.
