Slight increase to milk production in August

Milk production during August ticked upward slightly as farmers rebuild their herds.

USDA says production in the U.S. for the month was 1.6 percent at 19 billion pounds with production per cow up 34 pounds from last year.  

The herd size was down 11,000 head on the year but up 8,000 from the previous month. 

Georgia saw the largest increase in production during August, up nearly 15 percent, followed by South Dakota, up 14.5 percent.  Florida reported the largest decrease, down more than 10 percent, followed by Washington (-4.2).  

Michigan remains the leader in per cow output at 2,290 pounds per cow, nearly 300 pounds above average.
