A shot of good news for the beef industry

A livestock market specialist says the beef industry finally received a dose of good news when China announced it would resume imports of US beef.

Scott Brown with the University of Missouri says prior to being shut out of that market in 2003 – the US accounted for nearly 70 percent of China’s total imports of beef.  “It’s 1.3 billion people who don’t consume that much beef today,” he says.  “But it’s a middle class that has a growing income.  One can certainly get very bullish about the opportunities that exist for US beef – especially longer term as we get established in that market.”

But, he tells Brownfield he wouldn’t be surprised if the markets are slow to react.  “Because we’ve kind of had this on-again-off-again dance with the Chinese about being able to import beef,” he says.  “Being able to get beyond that to really moving product we know there are some things that need to happen before we can begin importin beef to them.”

Brown says analysts are hopeful trade with China can resume before the end of the year.
