Several factors combine to push Minnesota corn yields into record territory

The extension corn agronomist for the University of Minnesota tells Brownfield harvest went very well.

Jeff Coulter says there were a lot of positives this fall.

“We had better than expected yields in a lot of the state, and moisture levels weren’t super high. We were able to get a lot of the fieldwork done, although we had snow which caused some challenges. But for the most part, I think things progressed pretty nicely.”

He partially attributes the higher yields to timely rainfall throughout the season.

“And we didn’t have air temperatures that were too hot for too many days, and I think the combination of those things really helped us. Along with fairly early planting dates this year.”

USDA is forecasting a yield of 202 bushels per acre for Minnesota, which would be a state record and the highest average yield of any state in 2020.
