September poultry production up 1% on year

The USDA says September 2021 poultry production was 4.453 billion pounds, up 1% from September 2020. Most of that was chicken at 3.972 billion pounds, 1% higher, with turkey at 470.541 million pounds, 1% lower.

The chicken slaughter rate and weights were also up on the year, at 803.516 million head and 6.55 pounds per bird, while the turkey processing pace and weights were down, at 18.305 million head and 32.18 pounds per bird.

Ante-mortem condemnations were 12.34 million pounds, 4% more than a year ago, with post-mortem condemnations at 26.75 million pounds, 6% less.

The USDA says poultry in cold storage at the end of September was down 17% on the year, with chicken and turkey stocks both dropping 17%.

The USDA’s next set of poultry production projections it out November 9th.
