September poultry production slightly above year ago

U.S. poultry production was up slightly during September.

The USDA says production totaled 4.481 billion pounds, up 1% on the year, with most of that chicken at 4.049 billion pounds, 2% higher, followed by turkey at 420.551 million pounds, 2% lower.

The chicken slaughter was up 2% at 816.343 million head with average live weights slightly heavier, while the turkey slaughter was down 6% at 17.188 million head with a 1.72 pound decline in the average live weight for all turkeys.

For the first three quarters of 2022, U.S. poultry production is 38.788 billion pounds, 1% ahead of the 2021 pace.
