Senators want to keep sugar policy as is

A bipartisan group of U.S. Senators is urging the Ag Secretary to reject efforts to weaken the current sugar policy.

They say while the U.S. is adequately supplied, it’s important that USDA not make changes that would create a glut in the market and collapse prices below grower costs of production.

Despite inflation and supply chain challenges, lawmakers say prices today remain comparable to other developing nations and the current sugar policy is zero cost to taxpayers.

Signers include Senate Ag Committee Chair Debbie Stabenow of Michigan and Minnesota Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith.
