Senators push USDA to distribute timber industry aid
A Wisconsin Senator is pushing the USDA to aid the timber harvesting and hauling industry. Tammy Baldwin tells Brownfield the logging industry is among the hardest hit by COVID-19 and the most overlooked by USDA assistance programs. “Right now, we’ve made certain that we have funded the Logger’s Relief Act so they just have to start distributing and allocating these funds but we don’t really have a lot of time to waste here. We have a lot of loggers and haulers who are facing hard decisions about whether they can afford to keep in business.”
Baldwin says the Loggers Relief Act added 200-million dollars to coronavirus relief and is intended to help harvesters and haulers with more than a 10% loss of revenue during 2020. “We would like the USDA to quickly provide this relief so that we can make it through this enormously challenging time.”
Baldwin, along with Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Tina Smith from Minnesota wrote to acting USDA Secretary Kevin Shea asking the agency to distribute the funding as soon as possible.
