Senators push FDA for feed additive approval

A bipartisan group of Senators wants to know why the Food and Drug Administration has not approved any feed additives that help lower enteric emissions of carbon dioxide from livestock.

A letter authored by Kansas Republican Jerry Moran questions FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf’s inaction as feed additives continue to be treated as animal drugs instead of food additives.  Moran says the FDA still approves product efficacy and safety, but the food additive approval process is many years faster, and the feed additives are needed to lower greenhouse gases and meet President Biden’s goal of halving greenhouse emissions by 2030 and net zero by 2050.
