Senators call for USMCA implementation delay due to COVID-19

A bipartisan group of nearly 20 senators is asking the Trump administration to delay its plan for implementing the US Mexico Canada Agreement on June 1st.

In a letter to US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, Senate Finance Committee members say the USMCA should not “enter into force until it’s clear that all three countries have fulfilled their respective obligations.” They say entry into force should only happen after all necessary regulations are in place and industries have had the opportunity to understand and implement them effectively.

The group says the public health crisis and supply chain disruptions caused by COVID-19 have left little, if any, time and resources to prepare for a smooth transition to the USMCA.

Senators that signed the letter include Chuck Grassley of Iowa, John Thune of South Dakota, Rob Portman of Ohio, Todd Young of Indiana, Ben Sasse of Nebraska, Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, and Sherrod Brown of Ohio.
