Senate voting on river infrastructure funding, preparing for farm bill debate

The U.S. Senate plans to vote today on two issues important to agriculture.  First, Senators will vote on 2019 appropriations on a bill that includes funding for the Army Corps of Engineers and the lock and dam system on the Mississippi River and its tributaries.

As soon as that vote is done, Senators will hold a cloture vote on their farm bill, which would set the debate rules and prevent a filibuster.  The vote would also open the door for filing amendments. That includes an expected amendment from Illinois Senator Richard Durbin to put a means test on premium subsidies for crop insurance.  Iowa’s Chuck Grassley plans to offer an amendment to change eligibility rules for commodity programs.

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says he has 17 Senators supporting the cloture vote.  McConnell previously said he wants the farm bill on the Senate floor before the July 4th recess.
