Senate continues working to restrict Trump’s tariff powers

The Senate might bring a compromise bill limiting President Trump’s tariff powers to the floor this fall.

There are two similar bills that would restrict the President’s use of Section 232 national security tariffs including steel and aluminum tariffs.

A Senate Finance Committee staff member tells Brownfield Chairman Chuck Grassley has asked them to combine Senator Pat Toomey’s Congressional Trade Authority Act with Senator Rob Portman’s Trade Security Act.

Toomey’s legislation would require Congress to approve all Section 232 tariffs issued during the last four years or they would automatically be repealed.

Grassley told reporters he would like to bring the compromise bill to the floor in September or October.
