“See and Spray” technology a highlight of Midwest Ag Industries Expo

“See and spray” technology has been one highlight of the 2022 Midwest Ag Industries Expo (MAGIE) in Bloomington, Illinois this week.

Farmers and retailers are testing out sprayer technology that offers an alternative to broadcast herbicide application, by detecting and spraying individual weeds throughout a field.

KJ Johnson, President of the Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association tells Brownfield the technology could provide more options as environmental groups push to further regulate herbicides.

“Maybe EPA will allow a higher rate if it will only be sprayed on individual plants instead of across everything.”

But Johnson does not see it eliminating the need for broadcast applications.

“You might see a weed today, but seven days later you are going to see another weed, so you may just need a broadcast application. I do think there is a niche market for the see and spray technology, but is it for every field? I don’t know about that.”

MAGIE attendees had the opportunity to drive new application equipment and test out new technology from more than 100 exhibitors.
