Secretary Perdue opposes reopening Dairy Margin Coverage enrollment

The Secretary of Agriculture is not in favor of re-opening enrollment for the Dairy Margin Coverage program.

Sonny Perdue told reporters Friday night, “The Dairy Margin Coverage program is an insurance program just like the safety net for crops. It doesn’t make any sense to have an insurance program and allow people to retroactively decide to have coverage after they need it.”

Perdue says allowing more DMC enrollment through the USDA’s new Coronavirus Food Assistance Program was requested, but he’s against it. “I feel very strongly about the principal insurance here. We chose to indemnify dairy people in other ways rather than to reopen the Dairy Margin Coverage program retroactively.”

Perdue says re-opening the Dairy Margin Coverage enrollment would only train people to not take insurance as they should and later apply for ad-hoc disaster or subsidies later when prices go down.
