Second generation armyworms reported in central Michigan

Michigan State University Extension educators located in the central region of the state say a rare pest resurgence has been reported with this year’s delayed frosts.

Monica Jean says there’s not much to be done in cover crops for second-generation armyworms but if found in early planted wheat fields, farmers should consider pest management options.

“It is not common, this is like a one in 60- or 70-year occurrence,” she says.

MSU Extension entomologist Chris DiFanzo tells Brownfield they haven’t been an issue since early September and because they are tropical, armyworms won’t survive over winter.

Educators gave updates during their weekly virtual ‘Lunch Break’ meeting Wednesday.
