Second crop alfalfa well on its way

Second-crop alfalfa is well on its ways in many parts of the Midwest.

In Minnesota, Extension crops educator Dave Nicolai tells Brownfield the first cut is nearly complete.

“The re-growth is doing very fine, so keep in mind the quality is in those leaves and protecting that.”

He recommends scouting for potato leaf hoppers and pea aphids.

“We do have some concern that people might be over-applying insecticides sometimes, (so) make sure you have an economic threshold. We don’t want to have resistance issues within the alfalfa crop itself.”

Nicolai says with the exception of northern Minnesota, the first cut produced high-quality hay.
