Sam Washburn honored by IBCA

Sam Washburn, who served as President of the Indiana Beef Cattle Association (IBCA) in 1978 and then as President of the National Cattlemen’s Association (NCA) in 1982, was presented the Robert C. Peterson Lifetime Achievement Award from the Indiana Beef Cattle Association during their annual awards banquet February 10.

Washburn says when he looks at the beef industry today, compared to when he was serving cattlemen, there are still a number of similarities.

“We have a widely diverse make-up of membership, mostly small breeders, we had small breeders back in 1982, we obviously had some large feedlots and we had some large ranches, but the make-up was that people had fewer than 25 cows, it’s still that way today,” said Washburn. “I think the genetics are improved, I think yield grades and quality grades are better because of the job being done by universities and the association.”
