Rural broadband important part of infrastructure development

Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue says investment in rural broadband is a key tenet to infrastructure development.  “Rural broadband has become just as important as roads, river, water, and utilities of any sorts,” he says.

He tells Brownfield rural communities can’t grow and develop without access to high speed internet.  “If we’re going to keep bright young farm kids on the farm,” he says.  “We’ve got to get them connectivity.”

And, he says, connectivity is vital for farming operations.  “Farmers are using more telemetry for irrigation control, for precision agriculture,” he says.  “They’re using the technology that needs connectivity today.”

Perdue says he’s expressed his concerns over the lack of broadband in rural America to the chairman of the FCC and anticipates a large investment to increase access in the next few years.
