Revised information on swine feed holding times

Pork industry officials have updated research on holding times for imported feed and feedstuffs as a way to prevent the spread of foreign animal diseases such as African Swine Fever.

Dr. Paul Sundberg, director of the Swine Health Information Center, tells Brownfield Ag News the new details decrease the holding times over the industry’s estimates last October. Sundberg says, “South Dakota State University has done a great job at looking at the half-life of virus in different feed components at three different temperatures.”

The goal is to decrease viral contamination to 99.999%, says Sundberg, “This isn’t a recommendation, it’s a report of research. And we’re putting the information out there for consideration for making feed safer. Nothing’s going to make it completely safe if it is contaminated but this will certainly help.”

Sundberg says it’s important hog producers talk with their feed suppliers about the origins and safety of their purchases.
