Report: 27 countries could face coronavirus-driven food crisis

Nearly 30 countries could be heading for a COVID-19-driven food crisis, according to a new report by the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization and World Food Program.

The “hotspot countries” are at high risk of food insecurity in coming months and a rising number of people experiencing acute hunger. The countries include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Haiti, Venezuela, Iraq, Lebanon, Sudan, Syria, Nigeria, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and more.

The FAO Director General says the countries were already experiencing food insecurity before the pandemic and now are at the frontline of COVID-19’s disruptions on food systems. 

The FAO is asking for $428 million under the UN system’s Global Humanitarian Response Plan for COVID-19 to address the needs in the food and agricultural sector.
